Khaps in india and its effects

Khaps panchayats are making lots of headlines these days and the area which covers it (haryana with over 27% of Jat Population) happens to be second in terms of per capita income in india which indicates it more to be social cultural norm instead of a baggage of economic backwardness.

Khaps are totally aginst the same gotra(sub-caste) marriage which they thinks is incest .

Hindus generally inherited gotra from learned rishi and over the century due to intermingling of different races and tribes the concept of gotra itself is under the questionmark.

Demands for amendment in Hindu Marriage Act have been put forward by khaps as defense which itself is not valid as even in hindus society of southern india , marriages between cousins are common.

In terms of legal activities Bombay High court in 1945 in the case of Madhavrao vs Raghvendra Rao case have declared same gotra marriage as legal.

As with time sati, widow marriages and female infanticide dropped its high time the same happens to khaps – the caste panchayats in india which can help in the restriction on honour killing as violence and loss of human life is never a solution to anything.

And with the ongoing media trail which has been started by major media corporate houses , media is again going over the top by imposing its view .

Hindus are generally known by castes and they have caste based reservation only provided by the competent authorities further caste based politics is quite common in Indian Politics Scenario.

Recently even government has approved the census on which caste is an instrumental factor which is the first of its kind after the era of 1930′s.

Under the prevailing society law you just can not impose selective preference as even today in arrange marriages same gotra marriages is prohibited.

What is required is the systematic study of the problem in hand with all the factors and an amicable solution which should not lead to any loss of human life and disregard of law
